Warm Milk… for Bedtime

Warm Milk for Bedtime // Once Upon a Time in a Bed of WildflowersWhen I was little and used to spend the night at my grandmother’s house, I could never get to sleep at night.

Now, it might have had something to do with the hot chocolate, M&Ms, ice cream, and cake she fed me from the moment I walked through the door until right before bedtime.

[By the way, Mom, it is NOT okay to do this to my kids when they spend the night at your house. Just sayin. 😉 ]

Then again, it might have had something to do with the fact that my grandmother’s house, which was the best, spookiest place to play hide-and-seek with my brother and cousins during the daylight turned downright creepy in the dead of night.

There are actually a few things you need to know about grandmothers’ houses:

  1. They are huge. Now, my one grandmother’s house actually was fairly large, but my other grandmother lived in a tiny ranch house. Nevertheless, at nighttime, both houses were HUGE, and full of closets, never-ending hallways, and furniture with sharp corners.

  2. They have secret passage ways. Honest. Just because you never found it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

  3. They have a ghost. Most of the time it lives in the secret passage way. Except when it comes out at night and sneaks around when you are supposed to be going to sleep.

So, all in all, going to sleep at my grandmother’s house was not something that I was all that willing to do.

Most nights, when I was staying there, just a little past bedtime, my grandmother could be found in the kitchen warming up some milk on the stove.  And drinking it always made me feel better.

And sleepy.

Scientists can’t seem to figure out (or at least agree) as to why a glass of warm milk will help you get to sleep at night, and I can’t imagine why it would actually matter: In this case, just accept that grandmothers know best.

I don’t expect that this is really my grandmother’s recipe. I never really paid attention to how she was making it… I mostly just sat at the kitchen table and watched her, with her hair already in rollers, slowly stirring the milk.

But this is the recipe I make for myself when it is very late, and my husband is out of town and my house has suddenly become huge.

(If only I could capture that hugeness… and apply it to things like storing winter coats, and finding enough bookshelves…)

Grandmother’s Warm Milk Recipe

(One serving; this recipe is easy to double)

1 1/2 cups of the best milk you can find (we use whole, unhomogenized, vat pasteurized milk from grassfed cows)

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon —like this

1 teaspoon raw honey — local is best

1/2 Tablespoon butter from grassfed cows (I like Kerrygold )

Stir together and warm gently over medium-low heat, stirring often. Use a whisk to create a little froth.

When it is warm, and the butter is melted, pour into a mug.

Turn off the TV and the computer and most of the lights, and sip slowly.

Sweet Dreams!

  1. I have memories like that of my Grandpa’s house…although I loved staying over I did find it scary. And in later years my cousin lived in the house and she said it was actually haunted! Anyway, your warm milk sounds delicious – I love the addition of the cinnamon – so comforting. Thank you for sharing your memories and this delicious recipe with us at The Hearth and Soul hop.

  2. This looks great. I am going to try this myself AND for my kids.

I also think that is a grandmother thing. My mom is the same with my kids even when I am around and telling her not too. It makes me wonder how bad she is about it when I am not around. LOL.

P.S. I liked this so much I shared this on my Facebook page.

Thank you for sharing your recipe at Meal Planning Monday Recipe Link-Up. What a fun post! I have similar memories of my grandma’s house, she traveled through Europe and Egypt back in the 70’s and her house was full of Egyptian decor from her travels, she was also an artist and music teacher so her home was decidedly eclectic. I was fun to play and explore her house, but at night trying to fall asleep surrounded by Egyptian statues was a bit tough. This post brought back good memories! 🙂 I hope you join us again this week! 🙂 http://www.aprilshomemaking.com/2014/04/meal-planning-monday-recipe-link-up-6.html

This post made me feel happy and content. I love thinking back to days when I visited my grandparents home. It was huge. Not as huge as I remember but as a child it was enormous. And the down home cooking. Sigh.

I chose your post as the feature for Simple Saturdays Blog Hop. Thanks for bringing up happy memories for me. I look forward to seeing what you share next.
