My Week on Wednesday… May 7

Hello and welcome to another My Week on Wednesday where I take a few moments to share what I’ve been doing over the week. I share some of the blogs I’ve visited, and some of the things that I have learned.

We have a new season; we have a new picture! (This one is actually compliments of my extremely talented husband!)

Last week we celebrated Beltane, or May Day. It marks the half-way point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice and the beginning of the summer season.

Believe me, that hairstyle was a special treat for May Day, but the Pixie has become very into braids lately… complicated Renaissance fair-type braids. Not my forte, to be sure, and made all the worse by my pre-competent fingers and her slippery straight hair! But I found an all-natural hair spray recipe from Taylor-Made Ranch that should help. Her recipe calls for rosemary, which I’m afraid might darken the Pixie’s hair, but Taylor-Made Ranch suggested that I try lemon juice, which is known to lighten blond hair in the sunshine! Oh, yeah! I think we are on to something here! 🙂

And, for those days when I don’t braid her hair, but turn her loose to play and swim and jump and roll in the dirt anyway… homemade hair detangling spray from Purposefully Simple. The Pixie’s hair is usually pretty easy to brush through, but I have these ingredients on hand already! I distinctly remember summer evenings sitting backward on a chair, cross-legged and hanging on to the back of the chair for dear life while my mother removed a day’s worth of playing from my hair! Ouch!

Speaking of summer, do you know what’s in those sports drinks people are always drinking after working out or playing hard? A whole lot of nasty stuff! Seriously. Don’t drink them ever — especially because it’s easy to make your own!  Don’t Mess With Mama has a great recipe for a homemade electrolyte drink–and you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen!

And Joybilee Farms shares how to make your own first aid ointment. You’ll need to plant some  Calendula, first though! Also, the Homestead Lady shares a great list of must have, must grow medicinal herbs.

Check out what Food Storage Moms did! She gathered up 30 Fabulous Apple Recipes! Go ahead, say it: Apples are a fall thing, right? Well, from-the-farm apples last about 10 months in cold storage. Which means that right about now, your local farmer has apples that are just starting to get a little squishy. She also is (hopefully) going to start having fresh produce soon. So that means apples have gotten cheap! So go ahead, try a couple of these awesome recipes out!

Also, check out Survival at Home’s Corn, Tomato, and Quinoa Salad. This is what summer tastes like! 🙂

Arabic Style Mint Tea. Tell me that doesn’t sound delicious? I have a great attachment to all food that is “foreign.” My cookbook shelf looks more like a travel guide. (Hey, I even tried The-Dessert-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named, remember?) And I have a TON of mint growing in my yard!

Finally, approximately daily, I post quotes on my Facebook Page. The quote with the most likes, shares, and comments will become the Quote of the Week.

And soooo… your Quote of the Week:

  1. Your daughter’s hair looks gorgeous! Brings back memories of wearing ribbons back when I was in elementary school. They were big back then! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. Your dog is adorable too.

You’re a great mom for seeking out natural personal care products and food. I love the electrolyte drink recipe. Coconut water, by itself, has a lot of electrolytes, but it sounds great with orange and lemon juice, too. Thanks for sharing!

    Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
