My Week on Wednesday… June 11

My Week on Wednesday // Once Upon a Time in a Bed of Wildflowers

Hello and welcome to another My Week on Wednesday where I take a few moments to share what I’ve been doing over the week. I share some of the blogs I’ve visited, and some of the things that I have learned.

So, what have I been doing all week? To tell you the truth, I haven’t the foggiest idea. This week has flown past… and I have accomplished very little.

The steps fell off our front porch. That was fun. We knew our steps were ugly and we wanted to replace them, but we had no idea they were barely attached to the porch–apparently put there by some previous owner who had only the vaguest idea of what carpentry is. When my husband started to fix them, it said it wasn’t so much a surprise that they had fallen off, but they had stayed on for almost ten years! Luckily my husband is awesome, and quite the carpenter. Our steps are now perfectly safe and sound and firmly attached to the porch.

The Boy had his first solo performance ever. Our school’s fabulous band teacher arranged for some of the kids to play at our neighborhood library’s book sale. He was nervous, but he piped out Ode to Joy like nobody’s business! 🙂

We were sick. Not the kids so far… just me and my husband. Luckily not at the same time. Probably with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. I thought it was something that only little kids got… but the strain floating around the school seems to be problematic for parents as much, if not more, than for the little  kids!

Unfortunately, Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is a virus, though not a particularly dangerous one, and there is not a lot you can do about it, besides wait for it to run its course. Obviously, eating well and sleeping well will give your body the tools it needs to fight it. And you can try these suggestions from Modern Alternative Mama as well.  Since it is generally a children’s disease, I also suggest watching Frozen, eating ice cream (for the sore throat; you know, perversely, Apple Rhubarb Sauce with Vanilla Ice Cream went down well) and an not insubstantial amount of whining. 😉

Things that didn’t happen this week: Getting my Indian Food Post up. Or my Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream post up. Or a lot of cooking — remember Beans & Rice are your friends.

So… moving on.

10 Minute Breakfast: Berry Omelet. Do I really need to say anything else? This sounds divine!

Fire Vinegar. I didn’t do this last week… though maybe I should have! But we–and by “we” I mean my husband who is totally into this sort of thing–will be making this toward fall!

How to Make and Use Mint Honey. Doesn’t that sound delicious? I have a crazy amount of mint in my yard (even crazier when you consider that my whole lot is only 1/10 of an acre and there is a house on it, too!). And I planted more this year. I dry mint for tea, but I am going to give this a try too. Because otherwise, what would you do with all the mint?

Speaking of lawns and yard and things bees like… The Bee Lawn. Would you do this? I would… if I had any space left!

I have to do something about my lack of compost pile. Well, I have one… but on account of some four-legged visitors we’ve been having, I haven’t added anything to it in a while. So… I have a lot of vegetable matter that is not being properly used and the question is: Should I get chickens for my yard, or worms for my basement?

(Please feel free to leave your vote in the comments!)

The Montana Homestead shares a really excellent post about learning about vermicomposting, with links to even more excellent posts. But The 104 Homestead wrote a post about chickens and composting. So… dilemmas dilemmas…

Did you ever wonder why your kid can’t sit still in class? Check out this really interesting article–not only is fidgeting explained solutions are offered.  (Hint: They look something like this.)

Do your kids get enough playground time in school? Do they play outside after school?

And, finally, Five Ways to get YOUR Smile in the Picture. Because you know it doesn’t happen.

Now for the Quote of the Week. Approximately daily, I post quotes on my Facebook Page. The quote with the most likes, shares, and comments will become the Quote of the Week. This week we had a tie!

  1. Thanks for the awesome shout out. My vote (of course) is for chickens 🙂

  2. Amber Pixie says:

Thanks for sharing the Fire Vinegar. 🙂 Your little man is adorable.

  3. I wonder if I’ll be in the majority of votes that say, “GET BOTH!” 🙂

Vermicomposting is just so stupidly easy and so cheap to start up. It’s amazing the almost miraculous super powers that come out of my bin, either for starting seedlings, or giving a boost to something as top dressing that needs a bit of oomph.

People look at me really weird when I tell them I’m more excited about my chickens’ compost output than I am their egg output. One thing to note though, if your four legged visitors are of the rodent variety, you need to be very diligent each night about picking up the chickens’ feed, or removing any kitchen scraps they don’t eat. Otherwise, that could be an attraction for mice for us country bumpkins, or possibly rats if they’re in someone’s area in the city. Not a huge deal and I have seen a mouse hole here and there around our coop, but not any more than I see other places around our acreage. Chickens can be mouse hunters, so if you let them free range your yard, there’s a decent chance they might actually catch a few. One breed in particular, The Buckeye, is reported to be quite the rodent hunter.
