My Week on Wednesday… August 13

My Week on Wednesday -- Join me each week to find out what I've learned, what I've been doing, and read up on the different blogs I've been visiting! ~ Christine @ Once Upon a Time in a Bed of Wildflowers

Hello and welcome to another My Week on Wednesday where I take a few moments to share what I’ve been doing over the week. I share some of the blogs I’ve visited, and some of the things that I have learned.

Yeah. It’s Thursday. That happens sometimes.

So… what’s been happening…?

Boy turns 10 // Once Upon a Time in a Bed of Wildflowers

This happened. I have officially been a mom for 10 years now! I can’t believe it! Happy Birthday, Boy, you make us all very happy!!!

This Really Good Birthday Cake Recipe is now my go-to for birthday cakes. I admit that since I made it for my mom’s birthday I have been fiddling with it… but it’s still the same basic idea. 🙂

What else…?

We took the Pixie to the Sterling Renaissance Festival. If you live anywhere near Upstate New York, I encourage you to go visit. It’s open for one more weekend this year!

Sometimes people come in costume… though not always having anything to do with the Renaissance. 😉 This year we saw a large number of men in kilts and women in corsets of some kind. As well as Gandolf, a unicorn in very short shorts, herds of fairies, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man, a few fauns, and, given that it was the Renaissance Festival, quite an over representation of people in Steampunk get-up. (Well, it was Fantasy Weekend!)

The Pixie rode a dragon manned by an acrobatic, shirtless fairy… who got on that thing, and inverted, while it was swinging. And then called the Pixie, “your highness” and kissed her hand. Yes, tips were given… for the hand-kissing, of course. 😉

We met the Queen.

And Loony Lucy of Empty Hats.

And played percussion with Bells & Motley.

The best part? My husband and I scored free tickets to come back the next day. Alone! We held hands, and tasted wine, and went to the “inappropriate” poetry show (actually, there was no reason to put “inappropriate” in quotes there… the show really was quite inappropriate. And funny!)

Then we were the ones wearing kilts and corsets… and tons of glitter. True, it started out as only me wearing the glitter… but it migrates, you know. Some of my glitter even went home on Giacomo the Jester! 😉

Without the kids… this is the only picture we have of the day!

(Sorry, about the lack of husband-in-kilt picture… or me-in-corset picture. 😉 )

And… what you really want is links… homesteading, real food links, right?

  • Making Medicinal Elderberry Syrup — Elderberry Syrup is supposed to be excellent for helping with colds and flu… and it is getting on to that time of the year.

  • Home Canned Peach Salsa — I have to admit, I had never considered making peach salsa… but this sounds delicious, and I really want to make some this year. Along with regular, salsa, of course.

  • How to Can Tomatoes — I have a bushel of tomatoes downstairs just waiting for me to finish up this post. And to get lemon juice; I seem to have run out. Sigh…

  • How to Can Pickled Beets — I sort of fell in love with pickled beets when I was pregnant with the Boy… and haven’t really gotten over it. I’ve never tried to can them myself, though — add this one to the list! 🙂

  • Streamline Vegetable Freezing — It’s that time of year… canning, freezing, or dehydrating every edible thing you can get your hands on. Or eating it. But that probably doesn’t work as well for people as it does for bears. Seriously, though… I also have corn, beans, and peppers waiting for me downstairs!

  • Best Pepper Powders on the Planet — Not. Even. Going. There. But my husband loves this post… and is already gearing up to kill us all with pepper powder!

  • Make Your Own Apple Cider Vinegar — I love posts that tell you how to use “garbage” to make something really delicious — or useful. And, really, apple cider vinegar is pretty much top-of-the-list in terms of usefulness.

  • Farmhouse Beef and Bacon Stew — I love this post because it has the word “bacon” in it. And it can be made in the crock pot. And it just looks like a warm bowlful of deliciousness. (And probably because it was 53 degrees when I woke up this morning.)

  • Blueberry Apple Rhubarb Pie — Doesn’t this flavor combo sound delicious? I bet it would go really well with stew… 😉

  • Mint Infused All-Purpose Cleaner — I just started a batch of this “brewing” the other day, and can’t wait to try it. We have lots and lots of mint, so I can see this one becoming a household favorite in no time!

And that brings us to the Quote of the Week. Approximately daily, I post quotes on my Facebook Page. The quote with the most likes, shares, and comments will become the Quote of the Week. This week, in honor of Sunday’s Full Moon…

I’m not making any promises about getting Thousand Words Thursday up today… as it is already Thursday, and I have a mountain of work ahead of me. I’m sure you’ll forgive me, just this once?

Thank you! (In the spirit of full disclosure, I feel like I should probably point out that I am not the one who did her hair. We paid the Fair’s Professional Braiders for that! 😉 )
